I hear a grinding noise when I shift on a VW Passat 03, what could it be

it is a manual transmission, 1.8 turbo charged 4 cyl.and it does this when l let go of the gas right before l press the clutch.Any help please.

So, when do you actually move the stick? Before the clutch is fully depressed.? Then you are not shifting correctly and are grinding gears. Shift slower and first make sure the clutch is to the floor before you move the stick.
