I have a vw jetta 1999 automatic, over 70 the engine or transmission is loud. It sounds like the trans racing

Seeing it is a ''you got to be there to hear it and feel it'' take it to a mechanic familiar with VW Jetta or automatic transmissions and let them take it for a drive. It could be you either have a hole in the exhaust, or your transmission is slipping and the bands need adjusting.(or you hit a cat) and it is swirling around inside the engine compartment.

almost impossible to diagnose from a written description. It could be

1. transmission/differential
2. axles
3. wheel bearing
4. tire noise
5. fender liner loose/ wind pushing it into tire
6. any number of things

things u can check:

check the inside of the fender well. if the plastic liner has a V cut into the bottom then it has been rubbing against the tire.

feel the inside of the front tires. if they r feathered or feel uneven this could make a lot of noise. When u r driving...and hit the brakes.if the noise gets louder it might be the tires.

you can steer back & forth while u r driving forward. If the noise is much louder when u steer one way then it might be a wheel bearing.

bad inner joint on the axle usually comes with a heavy vibration.
